PostSubject: The Oberoi, Lombok   The Oberoi, Lombok Icon_minitimeWed Sep 10, 2008 9:34 pm

Hi,

My finance and I are looking at getting married at the Oberoi Resort and have some questions we hope could get answered. Firstly, we would like to know if anyone has been there and what they think of it?

Secondly, can anyone inform us on whether it is appropriate to negotiate/barter on quoted prices for things such as our wedding ceremony, reception and accomodation?

Finally, we have been quoted extraordinarily high prices for wine and champagne, is it difficult to purchase wine and champagne in Lombok? What sort of money would we expect to pay in local supermarkets etc for a bottle of wine/champagne?

Any help would be great!

Thanks

Peter

PostSubject: Buying Champagne, wine etc in Lombok.......   The Oberoi, Lombok Icon_minitimeThu Sep 11, 2008 12:27 am

Hi,

I've not been to Lombok since January 2007. Then it was possible to buy Wine and Spirit in a few places in Lombok. Prices varies from 110000 - 150000 a bottle of Spirit, depending on brand. Wine 90000 - 150000 a liter (Most of the wine are sold in 2 and 3 liter bottles). It is not possible to buy Wine and spirit in the supermarked. I've never tried to buy champagne.

Concerning prices in the Oberoy: It is not easy to get discount, but if you go there personally, it migth be possible. I tryed once to get a good price for a one month stay, but they offered me only a few dollars off.

Regards

Hi Stopa003

It is now easier to buy wine in Lombok, with Hatten a Balinese brand readilly available in tourist areas.

The Hatten Alexandria is the best of them at about Rp70,000 - 80,000. Cheaper if Bali if you were wanting to get a few cases. You would also get a bigger selection of imported wines in Bali to bring over but they do seem very expensive.

As Hfraast mentioned the 3 litre wine bottles used to pretty much all we could get, although imported are not nice at all. I would prefer the Hatten anyday.

Sorry I cant tell you anything about the Oberoi - out of my price range Like a Star @ heaven

Thanks for your replies!

We were thinking of bringing a few cases over from Bali, we were also thinking of flying over to Lombok using Merparti. Do you think there would be any issues taking a case of wine per passenger? Is Merparti a good airline or should we look at other options?

We may just ask Oberoi for a better price, we are spending a lot of money there for only a few days and will be bringing a number of guests over too.

Cheers

Peter

Hi Peter
Congratulations on the coming nuptuals!
I haven't stayed at the Oberoi, only popped in for a look, and it looks very nice. Very much a honeymoon sort of hotel - as in a special stay to remember.
I've never seen champagne for sale in Lombok in any stores, so I guess only the upmarket hotels would import it in.
If you bring cases of wine over on Merpati it will obviously count toward your luggage total weight. They may charge you excess, but it is not a great deal.
You can buy Omni in Macro for about $25 a bottle (or 180,000 rp). Not sure if they have nicer brands and how much - but if that price is anything to go by, expect to pay at least double or triple what you pay in a bottleshop in Australia.

Perhaps you could ask the hotel to make a nice alcoholic fruit punch to serve your guests (you may need to supply the recipe). Have a champagne toast, then for the tables have a nice punch. It would cut down on the amount of wine you need to supply your guests while keeping with the tropical wedding theme. Just a thought.

As Freo says the only issue with bringing case of wine to Lombok from Bali will be the weight. No problem bringing alcohol from one island to the other.

Boxes will be lighter than cases and a box of Hatten costs Rp135,000.

I have seen champagne for sale in Carrefour in Bali but it seemed very expensive.

Freos idea for a fruit punch sounds good. I usually make a rum punch when we have a party and it goes down a treat.

Good luck in getting the prices down and dont forget to come back and post a few wedding pictures after the event Very Happy

Have you booked already? If not I might be able to help you out on this one. If you already booked it will be difficult

I stayed in Oberoi many times, have good relation with the management. It's a lovely place. In my opinion the Oberoi Lombok even gives just that little extra then the Oberoi in Bali. I stayed in a lot of 5 stars in my short life, but this one just wipes all other any-star hotels of the map.

the oberoi is a lovely hotel with great attention to detail. oberoi bali needs a good reno.

as you are having the reception in a hotel, maybe you can ask them to give you a discount? they may drop off the service charge (although the staff still do get service even if its not actually 'charged'). most hotels wont allow you to bring your own wine in without a corkage fee, so it may be asking a lot unless it was a bottle or two of special wine.

Hi Kajje,

We are currently in negotiations with Oberoi at the moment. If you have any tips or can help in getting a decent deal, please let us know, it would be greatly appreciated! We are really looking forward to coming to Lombok.

Hi, I do weddings in Bali and am starting in Lombok shortly. I'm betting that there would be no discount for the actual wedding portion of the costs..its pricey to do there purely because of logistics. The corkage will be very high at Oberoi I'm betting...most of the big hotels in Bali charge around $20 to $25 us per bottle!! Try and negotiate on the alcohol...thats where the main money will go!

As long as you not exeed weigth limit (totally, incl. your other luggage) it is no problem.
You are flying domestic, so there is no customs fee.

And even if you are overweight, excess baggage costs between Bali & Lombok are minimal.

However if you are thining of buying your alcohol in Bali be aware that there is a shortage at the moment of branded spirits that looks likely to continue for a while.

Hi,

Thanks for that, we were thinking there would be no real problem. We are planning on bringing wine over, unless we can get hold of a place in Lombok that sells wine for good value. Anyone know of a place, and where we might be able to get hold of a price list in Lombok?

Thanks

When is the wedding?

I think imported wine is also effected too.

Apparently it is to do with the import quota for the year already being reached in July and so no or little imports and the only licenced import agency is waiting for its licence to be renewed.

This will be effecting Lombok as well as Bali.

The main place to buy spirits and wine from in Mataram is rather discrete, there is no sign, no advertising and I doubt any such thing as a price list. Any time I have been there they have had a very limited selction of wines.

If you really do get stuck of the locally made wines Hatten Alexandria is the best IMO. Still available as not an import and you can buy it from between Rp60,000 - 70,000 per bottle.

hi There

We run a bar in Senggigi and I can tell you champagne is not available here at this stage and everything else is also not really available as the government has stopped all alchohol in Jakarta over a corruption issue and will not release it at this stage. also sometimes I have people bring it from Bali for me on the plane , however on some occasions they have been stopped with having too many bottles. Better to ship it over from a courier company to avoid issues at Bali airport.

Beach club juice bar Mungkin soon Laughing
