Hi,

We are planning our honeymoon for New Years and are thinking about visiting Lombok. How is the weather there around this time? I've heard it is the monsoon period, but what does that actually mean?

Does it rain and is cloudy all day and every day?

/ Olof

Anyone?

Is it worth while going there, if we wanna stay on the beach or by the pool a couple of hours a day?

Hi Olof

It is the rainy season at that time. However depending on where you are there is more or less rain. Kuta down in the south has a lot less rain and Novotel would be a nice option for a Honeymoon.

It rarely rains all day every day. Usually just a very heavy downpour for an hour or two. But it is sometimes longer.

Hope this helps a bit.

Ok. Thank you.

We we're thinking of Hotel Ombak, on Gilli island.

I dont think I have ever been on the Gilis during rainy season so I can't really say.

On Lombok it can be pouring down in one spot and bone dry 1km up the road.

The south is definitely the driest area, in December we are still having water shortages.

Gilis being small islands and closer to Rinjani may get more rain... hopefully somebody else will be able to help.

It can rain quite a lot, usually in the afternoon and at night, and be windy with big waves. Occassionally it might rain all day. That being said, I also recall beautiful sunny weather with light breezes and no waves around new year. So, like the weather tends to be, it is unpredictable. It is quite hot and very humid.
You should be aware that the risk of malaria is higher in the wet season, and the Gilis do have malaria mosquitos, so it is essential you take malarial medication if you are staying there that time of year.
It is possible it would be drier around Kuta Lombok, so perhaps - if rain is a big concern - you should consider it as an alternative to the Gilis.

PostSubject: Rain in Gilis   Lombok for New Years Icon_minitimeSat Sep 12, 2009 9:12 pm

Since 2005 - rained 26th till about 30th December ,2006,2007 no rain in Gili Meno over Christmas - last year it rained from about 23rd December and on and off. Gili Meno has a little micro climate - and we almost prey for rain. It rains like crazy in Lombok but the rain comes across the ocean but usually falls just short of the islands.

World wide the weather patterns have been unpredictable but in the islands one usually doens't get the heavy downpours like Lombok and Bali.

Ok, thanks for all the info.

I think we might head for Koh Samui instead and check out Gilis/Lombok some other time!

Cheers!
