(RTTNews) -
An active volcano erupted in
Indonesia,
spewing ash and lava more than a mile into the sky, damaging crops but
not yet endangering the safety of villagers, an official said Sunday.
Mount Baru Jari on Lombok island, near
Baliand active for several months, erupted thrice between Saturday night
and early Sunday, said the island's volcano-monitoring official.
"From
yesterday (Saturday) evening to early today (Sunday), the volcano
erupted three times and was accompanied by tremors. The first eruption
spewed ash and lava 1,500 to 2,000 meters high," he said, adding
Sunday's eruption was "big".
Lava flowed into a lake, pushing
its temperature by 14 degrees Celsius, from 21 degrees Celsius to 35
Celsius, he said. The smoke spread as far as 7.44 miles (12 kms) and
dozens of acres of crop land were covered by ash. But the eruptions did
not reach dangerous levels yet, so villagers were not evacuated, he
added.
