PostSubject: Sport in Lombok   Sport in Lombok Icon_minitimeThu Aug 25, 2011 8:01 am

I am looking to move to Lombok for 8 months from October for research. I am a keen marathon runner and triathlete and wondered if there were any running clubs or what sort of sports facilities are available on the island?

This might sound a silly question, but how safe is it to run in Lombok - are there too many vehicles on the roads?

Also, how easy is it to find and rent a small one bed/ studio apartment? Are they expensive? Where is the best place to look?

Any help would be great!

PostSubject: Roads for running in Lombok   Sport in Lombok Icon_minitimeThu Aug 25, 2011 9:42 am

Somewhere else here, Freogirl had provided information on conditions for running. I am sharing my perspective on the road conditions in Lombok.

Lombok is an island of three million residents with roads connecting different parts of the island. Most of the roads are on the periphery of the island as well as in the sourthern parts.

For long term stay, you are likely to consider the Sengiggi area in the northwestern part. This is where you are likely to find services catering to westerners.

There are hard surfaced roads in this area but there is usually lot of two and four wheel traffic at alll times. In this area the contour of the road follows the topography. This area is quite safe under normal circumstances. It is a different matter whether you will enjoy long runs on the road going up and down with all kinds of traffic. It is common for drivers to blare their horns to warn pedestrians and slow moving animal drawn vehicles.

Once you settle down, you are likely to find suitable spots. Also most of the beaches are public and that may be another option.

Enjoy your stay in Lombok.
