"The Lombok project aims to develop 1,200 hectares along seven kilometers of natural beaches in southern side of the island over the next 12 years into a world-class resort and residential community consisting of 10,000 luxury villas, eight hotels and two 18-hole golf course"

I will start my prayers again that this will never happen to beautiful south Lombok. No-one has yet to say how the water will be supplied to such a population of luxury villas, all I assume with pools. Lombok can't generate enough power for the local population as it is. How will power be supplied to this development? What of the environmental impact, let alone the impact on the local culture. And lastly, who on earth would want to live in such a place? It is too far from the wealthy European markets, and frankly, I think the Australian love affair with luxury villas will be fading by then. The baby boomers will be too old, the the population declining.
If it goes ahead, imagine what will be there in 80 years, our grandchildren's heritage. Not.

I agree with Freogirl... It's a very complex issue and the local sasak will lose it the long term

We can only hope that the pit falls that emaar suffered will happen once again. Short sighted greed, lack of organization. It seems that the things that detract from the lifestyle on the island also end up protecting it.

I agree that such big developements should be held to a minimum...but how can lombok expect to survive as a toursit destination if such developements are not encouraged. Obviously enviromenta concerns should be addressed. But such developements also provide improved living standards for local people. Getting the balanjce right between development and enviroment is difficiault...hopefully lombok does not go the same ay as bali....that is after all why lombok is much better than bali
