PostSubject: Few questions about moving to Lombok for some time:-)   Wed Oct 13, 2010 8:20 am

Hello everyone!

First of all it's great to find a forum like yours!! I've been looking through various places in the Internet and didn't find many helpful things and then found Lombok Lovers:)) After reading most of topics my vision of living on Lombok got more sharper:)

Few words of introduction - I'm moving to Lombok for a short time (+/- half of year) with my girlfriend. We're sure that we want to do it and surely will. I've got some questions and would be grateful for answering them:)

1. Internet

I've read the previous topics at forum - I know that if we would rent a house with telephone line we shoud use Telekom Speedy or if be lucky enough we could have Citramedia wireless Internet. I'm a bit worried what would happen if we wouldn't be lucky enough to fit any of those two - we need Internet to work. Did any of you guys here used any mobile internet? If so what telekom should we use? I found via Google that XL, Indosat and Telkomsel has offers to use Internet through mobile - which of those three has best network coverage on Lombok? Any suggestions?Smile

2. Place to live

As I read the forum the best place for foreginers to live is Green Valley and that's great. We are in love and don't want to get Lombok's people angry showing it;-) Are there any places like these that you could suggest? The most important things for me are Internet and being very close to sea as well as being in place where we could behave like in Europe/close to it.

3. Green Valley

Is it possible to surf there or is the wrong side of the Lombok to do so? Are there any ATM's and shops not far away? We would rent scooter so having it very close isn't the most important thing:)

4. Motorbike rental

Is car driving license from European Union enough to rent a motorbike? Or should we get a scooter instead?

Hm, it seems that's all - reading all your helpfull posts cleared out other questions sunny

Best,
Kuba

Hi Kuba

If you rent a house in Green Valley you should look for one with a phone line. Mobile internet is horribly expensive and not suitable for work.

Also, be very discreet about working on the internet as you are unlikely to have working visas in Indonesia. The issue is a grey one, because technically you are working in Indonesia as you are physically there, even though you are produce that work in another place virtually, and are likely employed by a company outside Indonesia and paid outside Indonesia. To my knowledge it hasn't been tested in court, but you do not want to run foul of immigration.

Also, be aware that Lombok suffers from frequent power outages. If you are reliant on power for internet and computer that can be an issue. You may need a generator, or work on laptops with wired internet connection and be prepared to head for the beach or bar when the power goes out.

Green Valley is a series of 'BTN's' or small suburbs and is located near to Senggigi. There is an ok beach across the road from the entrance to that area, with plenty of cafes and several bars in walking distance. There are good and bad areas of Green Valley - the bad ones are full of drugs and prostitutes and you don't want to live there. Before you decide what to do, meet some local expats and ask questions. Good places to meet are Beach Club, The Office, and Happy Cafe (particularly Saturday nights). A visit at night or early hours of the morning to the street of a house you are interested in will also tell you if the area is quiet or not.

There is a small wave for surfing off the point of Senggigi. It's nothing to get excited about. All the good surf is in the south. Nothing to stop you heading south for the weekend and doing some surfing, stay in a cheap hotel, but live in an area with more facilities like the Senggigi area.

Motorbikes - you need a motorbike license to rent a motorbike or scooter. Most start at around 90cc up to 125cc, whether they be a bike or scooter. Scooters are popular as they tend to be more comfortable to ride and are automatic, but are town bikes, so not really suitable if you intend to travel around the island (or out to the surf beaches). You need an international driver permit that is endorsed for a motorbike not a car. So, either get a motorbike license before you leave home, or pay the money and time to get one in Lombok. A car license, even if it allows you to ride a 'scooter' in Eurpoe, is not suitable. You may not be able to get a license in Lombok if you are on a tourist visa.

Make sure you have adequate insurance that will cover a medivac out of Indonesia if required. Consider whether you will take anti-malarials or not. Long term is not really feasible, but be aware there is cerebal malaria around banko banko (the surf spot).

You haven't mentioned visa - so I assume you know the score there.

Hello Freogirl!

Thanks so much for your answer! It clears a lot:-)

We will look for a house with phone line then - I hope we find one:) Small waves on Green Valley beach could be enough for learning - we're both complete beginners with my girlfriend:)) It's a pity with scooter/motorbike - I've got finished motorbike course, but didn't do exams because of work, maybe it could help. If not - I'll do exams on Lombok:-)

Just few more questions:

What's the shortest term to sign Telekom Speedy agreement? Is it not a problem for a local people while they rent a house?
What are those particulary bad parts of Green Valley? Prostitues/drugs doesn't sound good, but it's not a problem ignoring it - are those place connected with violence too?

Oh, we're taking care of insurance here that would work in Indonesia and will take Mugga to be safe from mosquitos:))

The last quesion - we were thinking about Visa On Arrival and then prolong it every month - is what you asked for about visa?

Thanks very, very much!!SmileSmileSmile

Ok, I've talked to Indonesian Embassy and everything's clear with visa, so don't bother answering that question:))
