| Hi Can anybody tell me and perhaps Greg you are still on here, I have heard a rumour tonight in Senggigi that the locals burnt a house to the ground of a bule in Kuta, please let me know this is not true.

| Wow, I hope that's not true too. That is certainly not the sort of thing you want to go on at any time, but particularly bad to happen during Ramadan as it is a time of peace and spiritual contemplation, not of violence and destruction. | |

| Hi Glenn,
I just spoke to my husband - Antok (aka Jobin) and he said it was Greg's house the locals destroyed but not by fire. They smashed the windows and the walls.

| My thoughts and prayers go out to you and Willie. I am glad it sounds like no personal physical harm came to either of you. I am not so quick to condemn either side since I know very little of the facts surrounding the incident. | |

| What I have heard - is that he cut the power cables to the mosque loudspeaker, which resulted in this reaction.
Although a rather extreme reaction, if that is what happened, in Lombok I would expect something like this from the locals if someone where to do that. And would imagine that he must have had some idea of the consequences too.
Made is over with us in Bali at the moment, so this is only what we have heard from our staff at Mimpi Manis.

| I can understand that you can get a little breakdown from the noise of these speakers but it,s Lombok. The island of the thousand mosques and more to come.So if you can't stand the sound don't live around. | |

| & I’ve heard that the man in question has been abducted by aliens & forced against his will to endure intense training in Islamic protocol, in a galaxy far, far away of course.
Come on people, if you don’t know the truth & then still decide to write about what “you’ve herd” then you are just a gossip.
Better to write nothing & look a fool than burst into print & prove it. The man in question is fine, he is not in hospital, he is not in shock, he is not going to be deported. Where does this crap come from?

| Well I am glad to hear that he is not in hospital... though we are yet to see if he will be deported.
As for being gossips, your first post here is to post on this thread and add your comments too .
Until there is some firm news, as with any significant event in a community, you will find that people talk about it. Be it online or in person.

| That's a bit harsh Mike - obviously an event like this is one that concerns the Lombok expat community. Why wouldn't it be discussed on a Lombok expat forum? We are all glad to hear that Greg is doing ok. As with any forum thread, if you see something has been reported incorrectly, please post an update but please refrain from attacking other posters. If you live in Lombok, you will know that it is often difficult to find out the truth about many things, and a facility like this forum is great for expats to share facts.

| We can only really know the cause, circumstances and possible consequences that led to this situation if and when we hear from Greg or Willy, so let us rather wish them well and keep them in our thoughts until then. | |

| well it's made the Globe. I think he's burned his bridges with this one http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/home/sleep-deprived-american-takes-on-indonesian-mosque-loses/393625Mataram, Lombok. It was never going to end well when a middle-aged American residing on the resort island of Lombok allegedly barged into a small mosque wearing his shoes, unplugged a speaker system used to broadcast sermons that he complained were disturbing his sleep and assaulted a worshiper. Enraged locals immediately began chasing the man, identified as Luke Gregory Lloyd, 64, who was saved from almost certain serious injury — or worse — by police in Kuta village, Pujut subdistrict. Nasruddin, a local, said angry residents then turned their attention to Lloyd’s house, trashing it. “He should consider himself lucky because at that time we decided not to beat him; we didn’t want to do anything stupid, but some people could not control their anger and decided to damage Lloyd’s house,” he said. The incident occurred on the evening of Aug. 22. Central Lombok deputy police chief Lalu Mahsun said Lloyd had been arrested on immigration charges because his residency permit had expired in April 2006, and taken into protective custody. He is being held at a local hotel were he is guarded by two police officers. Mahsun said that police in cooperation with local religious officials had also launched an investigation “to determine whether Lloyd’s actions can be classified as blasphemy.” If that was the case, he said, then, “We will arrest him immediately.” The charge carries a maximum jail term of five years. Mushan said it was not the first time Lloyd had objected to the activities conducted within the mushollah, or small mosque or prayer room, but this was by far the most extreme incident. Muslims worldwide are currently marking the holy month of Ramadan. Nasruddin said locals had put up with Lloyd for 15 years, even though he often lost his temper. He said he hoped police would ensure that justice was done for insulting Islam and not let him escape “just because he is a foreigner.” The Immigration Department could not be reached for comment. | |

| Another story in The Jakarta Globe - this time with Greg's response. http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/home/american-suspect-in-mosque-quarrel-claims-innocence/393900Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara.Luke Gregory Lloyd, an American being held on suspicion of blasphemy and immigration violations after disrupting a late-night Koran recital near his house, denied all the allegations against him on Tuesday. Speaking at the hotel where he is being detained by Central Lombok Police, Lloyd, who goes by the name Amaq Greg, said the police’s version of what happened on the night of Aug. 22 was incorrect. Amaq is an honorary title given to elderly men on the island of Lombok. According to the 64-year-old, he was constantly disturbed by the loudspeaker at a musholla (prayer facility) near his home in Kuta village. On the night of Aug. 22, Lloyd said he went to the musholla to ask them to turn down the loudspeaker, which villagers were using to broadcast their Koran recital. Police said Lloyd stormed into the musholla and berated worshippers. Lloyd, however, said he politely asked the villagers to turn down on the loudspeaker because the noise was not only disturbing him but also his expatriate neighbors. Police said the American entered the musholla without taking off his shoes and then unplugged the microphone being used to recite the Koran. Lloyd said he only got as far as the musholla’s courtyard, where he was pushed. He said he became angry and pushed back, at which point he was targeted by stones. “It is not true that I unplugged the loudspeaker’s cable,” Lloyd said. “It is not true that I stomped on a Koran. It is not true that I hit a minor at the mosque. None of the allegations are true. I only asked them to turn the speaker down.” He also said his house was trashed after the incident, with damages estimated at Rp 200 million ($22,000). Lloyd expressed shock that he had been attacked and his house damaged, saying that he had frequently helped residents since moving to the village more than 10 years ago. The American, who claimed to be a former mayor of a Californian city, said he taught English in the village and financially assisted three children there. When asked about allegations that he had violated the immigration law, Lloyd said his visa was valid until April 1 next year. Lloyd, who refused to have his picture taken, said he hoped to be able to stay in Indonesia and return to Kuta village. He said he had contacted the US Embassy in Jakarta but had not yet received a response. He is staying at a hotel in Praya, Central Lombok, and appears to be guarded loosely by police. Lloyd said he was allowed to leave the hotel on his own to do his daily shopping. Earlier, police confirmed that Lloyd had been charged with blasphemy and was also suspected of immigration violations. Police said they were requesting the help of an expert from the Ministry of Religious Affairs in their investigation into the blasphemy charge. | |

| Sad story no matter whose version you believe. The brief info received via email from Greg and posted earlier was basically what he told me at the time. This goes into much more detail and gives alot more info. I occasionally attend the mosque where the incident happened. Greg is also a friend of mine. So no matter what it makes me very sad to hear. | |
