A BRITISH scuba diver has cracked a world record - by spending more than two
days underwater.
Will Goodman, 32, was 20ft down for 48 hours, nine minutes and 17 seconds.
Shattered ... Will after record
When he surfaced his hands were swollen, his puckered skin began to fall off
and he had "nappy rash from hell". He said: "It was like being tortured."
Professional diver Will set his record off the Indonesian island of Lombok. He
was in a metal cage and oxygen was supplied by a support crew. They fed him
rations through a tube and told jokes to keep his spirits up.
He watched gangster films on an underwater iPod to stay awake. Will told The Sun: "The first 24 hours were paradise, very serene and
meditative, with rays and fish swimming past and lightning strikes
illuminating the water above me."
But his body later began to feel heavy. He said: "It's a pressurised
environment and after a while really begins to hurt.
"
Will, originally of Borehamwood, Herts but now living in Indonesia, almost
quit at 30 hours. He said: "It felt as though my legs were being stabbed. I felt like I'd been
bricked into a wall and my mind became distorted. All I thought about was
having a nice cup of tea."
Consultant dermatologist Dr Richard Ashton said skin expands if the surface
layer gets "overhydrated". He said: "It cracks and becomes like paint
peeling." Despite the pain, Will, whose dive was witnessed by Guinness World
Records adjudicators, insisted: "These things are there to be done."
