Football in Lombok

Hi there, I'm coming to Lombok for 5 nights. Looking to do some surfing/diving and after looking at this site, fishing aswell!

I was curious, however as to where to watch sports in Lombok. In particular, there's a match that I am keen to watch on the 14th. It's an A-League soccer/football game. I'm not sure if this gets any air play in Lombok.

Please let me know if you know anything about places that do/have in the past shown a-league games.

The Beach Club is a sure bet. It has a nice bar and home cooked food also.

When you say A league soccer, I assume you mean European football (soccer) A league?

One of the biggest problems is that the European football games are at the very early hours of the morning, when bars are closed, so Im not sure if the Beach Club would show an A league football game, but certainly check with them. You should also check with The Office (bar & restaurant in Senggigi).

Soccer is a national passion in Indonesia, and according to my husband is available on free to air TV. So if you can't find it at a bar, then ask the locals as they would likely be watching it at home (if it's being broadcast) and you might be able to get an invite.

By A-League, I'm afraid I meant the beleaguered Australian soccer league... of which I'm sure most people won't have heard. I just found out my team can win the league on sunday - so I thought I'd look around to see if anyone's playing that match!

A few places have Indovision - I dont know is they show Australian football and even if so there is unlikely to be a special screening but if you go somewhere that has Indovision I I am sure they will let you watch it.

haha Australian A league. So are you supporting Sydney FC or the Victory?
I really don't know if anyone shows Australian soccer, they would have to be getting Australian foxtel probably? But you never know!

It is too bad you are going to miss watching your favorite team playing but I wonder about these soon after watching the "Super Bowl" football in USA:

1. Why do the football players in Australia do not wear any protective gear and yet they are as physical as the American football players?

2. Do you have "World Series" like the American baseball players have?

3. Do you use the terms "super" and "world" the way it is used in USA?

Josi, Hersh is referring to the World Game, which is Soccer. No soccer player wears protective gear, including in the States. It is called the World Game as it is the only football game that is truely international and played in the largest number of countries in the world. Even in America. It is pretty much the only football played in South American countries, most Asian countries, African countries, and European countries.
Australia has a soccer league, most of the good players play for teams overseas. They qualified for the World Cup, which is held every 4 years, last time and got to the finals. We have hopes for this year's world cup.

Australian Rules football is played in Australia only. Australians would never presume to use the words 'super' or 'world' when referring to an uniquely Australian game. Aussie rules footballers don't wear protective gear as it would disrupt the game too much - too many players would be falling about on the ground laughing at the blokes wearing the gear for the game to proceed.

If you ever get a chance to watch a game you should, if you enjoy a good fast game of contact sports. Aussie rules can be quite physical, but it is very different from American football, which is more of a rugby style of play (I find it hard to understand the actual differences between the various codes of Rugby and Amercian football - it all seems pretty much the same to me). Aussie Rules players need to be free to jump, run fast, and kick the ball. There is nowhere in the game where players scrum together like in Rugby/American football. Occassionally you get a pile of players on top of the ball, but only 2-3. It is illegal to throw the ball in Aussie Rules, but you can pass it via a hand-pass. A technical difference, but quite important to how the game is played.

Aussie rules is played in our winter - well it used to be. It starts earlier each year and goes longer. The proper season starts in April/May and finishes in October. These days we get a pre-season competition which starts soon. Soccer is played over the summer, which is ridiculous as it is a winter sport. All to do with when it is played elsewhere, and the availability of stadiums and fans (who follow other codes as well).

I was mixing up all the three, but now I have the background.

I can watch soccer games as well as Rugby games from Australia on some international channels available on our subscription. I do not believe I have watched Australian football.

You have also pointed out the difference between "passing" and "throwing". I will pay more attention when I watch the games next time.

I wonder if your TV showed the Blizzard we went through during the last few days. We had electricity throughout because it heats the house. After seven days, we are going out for groceries, Post Office, ATM etc.
