The best chance you will have of finding something like apple cider vinegar would be the big supermarket at the Mataram mall. I've never seen ingestible aloa vera for sale in Lombok. The range of natural medicines, even basic vitamin and supplements, is really limited and very expensive.

Your options are:
1. see if you can source it in Bali. There is a very large expat community in Bali, many quite wealthy, so you can get just about anything. There are several specialty stores catering to expats that will source things and bring them in for you if you arrange it, and are willing to Pay.
2. I found I had a lot of time on my hands in Lombok, so I experimented with making some of my own things. You could try making apple cider vinegar, the biggest problem would be finding the right apples as local apples tend to be quite sharp and would not contain enough sugar for apple cider (which is usually made with late harvest apples that contain the most sugars).
3. source on-line and import. You would definately want to have it delivered to a PO box address at the post office. If you live near Senggigi you can arrange a PO box at the post office there.

I grew aloa vera in my garden, which grows like a weed in the tropics, in fact I grew several varieties of Aloe. You can fillet the leaf to get the jell which is the bit that you ingest (don't ingest the sap). Chuck the slimy sap and scoop out the clear solid gel. Rinse it in a mild vinegar solution to remove as much sap as you can. It doesn't smell good when it is a-la-natural, but that makes me wonder what they do to it when they process it commercially. Eating aloa vera gel is pretty potent and you would only want to do so for a specific ailment. Mostly I use aloe vera externally.

I just wanted to add something in regard to supplements. The food in Lombok is absolutely packed full of everything. The soil is so rich in all the vitamins and minerals. Eating a heathy diet in Lombok is about all the average person really needs. Even after just a couple of weeks people notice a difference. This is not directed to you LovetheGilis, just to anyone else reading about Lombok.

PostSubject: I suppose even the non-vegetarian food is healthy   apple cider vinegar Icon_minitimeSun Feb 28, 2010 12:24 pm

Can I say generally the meat products available locally or farm produced ones are better than mass produced meat products in western countries?

Can I also say that the sea food available in Lombok is free of mercury because the pollution has not become a big problem?

Having said that, I wonder if it is only a matter of time before the living standards will improve and the per capita pollution will also grow Sad

Hi Josi, I wish you could say that Indonesian seafood is free from mercury, but the fact is that it is alarmingly high, as it is just about everywhere in the world. Pollution is a big problem in Indonesia as unregulated industries pour contaminants into the sea, and large populations dump their rubbish. Kalimantan have a big issue with mercury being used in the gold process there and contaminating local waterways and the population.

Studies have found very high levels of mercury in hair samples of Indonesians in a recent study, and there has been a marked increase in mercury related health issues over the last 20 years. These studies were particularly focused on Indonesia as a society that relies on fish as a main source of protein.
In 2007 China banned all seafood imports from Indonesia (although I suspect that was a little bit of tit for tat over Indonesia banning some Chinese products, wasn't that also around the time when China had the milk product recall?)

I would never eat processed seafood from Indonesia. I do eat locally caught small fish. Never large fish or anything caught as part of a commercial fishing operation.

Karen,

I start fantasizing about my next trip to Lombok months in advance. It is always about the fruits, the sea food restaurants, the warung food etc.

I was aware of the pollution caused by Lombok residents: dumping trash into river streams----->emptying into the ocean - but never thought about the impact of mining industries. Sad

well i suppose I could just drag a couple of gallons over each time i come...heheh, and thanks Josi for the lesson on how to harvest the ingestable part of aloe. Freogirl, yes i agree that is one of the reasons i love Lombok so much, that i always feel so healthy there. My inquery was for my lombok fiance/husband in four weeks!!! He suffers from acid reflux, and i am looking for ways to help him prevent it rathur than just mask the symptoms(ie pharamceuticals). While the fresh food is abundant, the caffine, nicotine, oil and probable use of msg are sources to reckon with in the indonesian lifestyle. I appreciate your responses, I suppose over time I will be able to develop a food routine that will alleviate his symptoms. Once I can stay in Lombok for longer times i want to start sprouting etc, so we can live a long healthy life!!! Cool

His acid reflux could definately be diet related, and good luck getting him to change that! Local guys often indulge in all the things that can bring on acid reflux - fried foods, smoking, alcohol, coffee, tea, too much sugar (how many tablespoons of sugar does he have in his coffee?), and as you mentioned - MSG is in everything. Also, there is a tendency to have a large meal at night, stuffing yourself full of rice and fried tempe. If he also eats western food that will be even worse.

I'm sure you know the best way to treat acid reflux is to identify the foods causing it and stop eating them. It will depend on how flexible he is as to whether he will try. In my experience, most Indonesians want a tablet or injection to fix whatever is wrong, and are not willing to stop doing whatever is causing the problem in the first place.

It can also be brought on by stress, a common sympton in men with upcoming nuptials cyclops scratch
