PostSubject: Hari Raya Neypi   Thu Mar 05, 2009 1:53 am

I wonder if someone can share information on this based on their experiences. Here are some questions.

Knowing life comes to a halt on this day:

1. Are there major differences in Lombok and Denpasar?
2. If you are staying in a hotel, are the basic services available?
3. Are there elaborate ceremonies in a Hindu temple that is open to the public?
4. Are there any temples in Sanur (Jalan Sanur Beach, Banjar Semawang)?
5. Does it last one or more days?

Hi Josi

1) Yes. in Bali everything is shut down for 24 hours. You are not allowed out on the street. In homes you can not use electricity or lights. Tourists have to stay in their hotel for the 24 hour period from 6am 26th March - 6am 27th March. Even the airport is closed during this period only emergency landings are allowed.

2) Yes.

3) There are no ceremonies on Nyepi itself. The eve of Nyepi there are usually Ogogh ogogh parades, these have been banned in Bali this year as it is close to elections. However I understand they are still going ahead in Lombok. The biggest parade is in Cakra, I think.

4) I couldnt name a temple but you can be sure there is one.

5) Nyepi lasts 24 hours from 6am-6am. Though I have read that in some areas toursists are told they have to be in their hotel by midnight the night before.

Will you be in Sanur or Lombok for Nyepi or is this what you are trying to decide?

PostSubject: Thanks   Thu Mar 05, 2009 10:25 pm

Gemma,

Thanks for painting a complete picture for me on the Hari Raya Neypi.

I started thinking about my next visit which is likely to be March 2010. Based on your feedback, if I my next trip includes March 26, 2010, I am better off in Lombok than Denpasar.

Sorry Josi... I am not sure of the dates next year. My response was re this year only.

Also iot depends what you are looking for. If you dont minds 24 hours in your hotel you may find the Ogoh Ogoh parades beforehand make it worthwhile!

Personally I can not live with no electricity, lights, and in silence with a small child (who wont sleep in the dark!) So we will be checking into a hotel this year. I have been scorned on a little for this but I look upon it the same as I dont feel the need to fast during Ramadan when I am in Lombok! and what is more annoying is when tourists scorn .... talking about their parties, fun and get togethers... well thats not NYEPI and in Bali its not allowed. If we even had lights on we would have pebbles thrown at the window to tell us to switch off!

I am not the only one.. many people move out of Bali for Neypi or move into hotels. Bali Dog kennels have been fully booked for nearly a year!
